I. Period of Stay

Every visa other than a permanent resident visa and a high skilled professional(ii) visa has a limited period up to five years that the visa holder can stay in Japan.

It is able for a visa holder to apply for extension of the visa from three months before the maturity of the visa.

II. How to Apply for Extension of Your Visa

It is required to file the following documents to a regional immigration services bureau under Immigration Services Agency of Japan("ISAJ") to apply for a renewal or an extension of its stay until the maturity of its stay. 

A. an application form in a regulated format(“APPLICATION FOR EXTENSION OF STAY”「在留期間更新許可申請書」). 

B. your photo (The photo is not necessary if you are under sixteen, if you are not a “mid or long term resident「中長期在留者」”, or if the term of the applied renewal is in less than or equal to 3 months. ) 

C.  documents required by regulations in accordance with the type of visa 

Please refer to each visa page through our "Types of Visas" page, on what kinds of documents are required by the regulations made by the ministry of justice for each visa, while it might be difficult to prepare required documents adequately by the applicant.

It is also principally necessary to show the passport and the residence card of the applicant on filing the application, unless the applicant hires a registered legal specialist like a registered "gyoseishoshi" lawyer or an immigration lawyer and the lawyer bring the passport and the residence card of the applicant to the regional immigration bureau on behalf of the applicant.

The minister of justice of Japan is authorized to determine if the application should be permitted or not, in its discretion in accordance with the criteria defined in ICRRA which requires a considerable reason to approve the application.

: 48,000. JPY including sales tax, in case that the condition of the stay, job, family and so on, has not been changed.

: 78,000. JPY including sales tax, in case that the condition of the stay has been changed and additional information should be submitted.

If unable to apply via internets,

: 68,000. JPY including sales tax, in case that the condition of the stay, job, family and so on, has not been changed.

: 98,000. JPY including sales tax, in case that the condition of the stay has been changed and additional information should be submitted.
