Who can get a Spouse Visa?
A foreign spouse of a citizen of Japan or a foreign spouse of a permanent resident, including a designated permanent resident can get a spouse visa in Japan.
What kind of conditions are required to get an approval?
The marriage should be valid in both of the countries, the citizenship of which the couple have.
Also the marriage can be regarded as valid in comparison with the civil law of Japan.
For example a same-sex marriage is still invalid in Japan. A marriage can not be valid without registration in Japan.
A spouse of a Japanese or a permanent resident is required to live with its husband or its wife in Japan in order to get a spouse visa.
What type of application should be chosen?
If a spouse of a Japanese or a permanent resident doesn't live in Japan, an application for issuance of a certificate of eligibility should be chosen.
If a spouse of a Japanese or a permanent resident lives in Japan with other status of residence, an application for change status of residence should be chosen.

How long shall it take to get an approval?
It shall take two weeks to one month, if applied for change of status of residence.
It shall take one to three months, if applied for issuance of a certificate of eligibility.
How many years is it permitted to stay in Japan with a spouse visa?
The term of the stay shall be determined by the minister of justice at the same time of the approval from the following options:
five years, three years, one year, six months
